In this lab students compare two types of aspirin using titration. The focus of the lab is on stoichiometry so this titration can be done just after you teach moles. Students will first calculate how much NaOH it should take to neutralize the aspirin based on stoichiometric calculations. Then they will do the lab and find out how much NaOH it actually takes to neutralize the aspirin and do a percent error calculation.

The fact that students titrate two separate types of aspirin is a great way for them to see that the more reactant you add, the more product you will get. As the Next Generation Science Standards do not specifically discuss acids & bases, this is a great way to integrate some of those traditional concepts into your NGSS aligned curriculum.
